on the choppy sea
the surf and the distant light
marking time
Today to my dismay
I’m older by yet another day,
no longer the youngest kid on the block.
How did it happen?
How’d I get to be fourteen years older than
my late father,
approaching the age of Methuselah,
or so it seems
when I limp across the beach with my staff?
clouds grumble
the ocean slaps the shore
one wave at a time
What happened to the kid
who climbed oyster shell mountains,
scaled the old post office building,
raced the waves into shore,
kissed the prettiest girl in the sixth grade,
batted clean-up on the softball team,
starred in the senior class play,
went to war before he could vote?
stillness
the face in the lily pond
frowns at me
Was she right when my lovely friend told me
I was indestructible?
I guess I’ll keep on trying to prove it.
a perfect day today
for laughing
with the laughing gulls
Blessings and Love - Micke

in the eyes of those who love you

Fabulous opening lines, and what a wonderful contemplation of this mysterious pull of time. And what splendid poet's advice to laugh with the gulls :)
Many happy days ahead xx
Christine
About that other matter, somebody had to kiss the prettiest girl in the sixth grade. I tried, she rebuffed me. Drat!
Two years ago on my birthday it was inconceivable to me that I was seventy. It still is.
Happy Birthday, guy.

This poem is beautiful - it reads in waves. It ebbs and flows as your beloved sea. Happy, Beautiful Birthday, Gene . . . the gulls are sure to throw you quite the celebration!
Blessings,
Christine
HAPPY BIRTHDAY

and yes, indestructible!!
