Poem Artwork

A man's penmanship is an unfailing index of his character, moral and mental, and a criterion by which to judge his peculiarities of taste and sentiments.
      - 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Dormer Stanhope,

The Keyboard Has Corrupted My Handwriting

Pen or pencil in the hand
I'd write my name, as scroll of brand
My signature, a list or card
Checkbook balance, tumbled hard

I'd doodle on my blotter white
Nonsense, squiggles, left and right
Doodled on the telephone
Made my own Rosetta stone

Vainly thought my hand unique
Thought my squiggles pretty neat
In penmanship I'd earn an A
With letters that  would wave and sway

HA
Now

Now I type instead of write
My signature is quite a sight
I hate the feel of pen in hand
My scribbles no one understands

I write like one with broken fingers
A note from me is quite the stinger
Can't read back what I wrote
Have to wing it, never quote

The keyboard is the sign of times
With pen an artifact of kind
I'm like the caveman with the wheel
Rather roll than toe to heel

Anyone else notice their handwriting changing over years of keyboard use?

My handwriting is horrible.  I used to love writing longhand, but now feel like it is an imposition on my time.  Even writing my signature after using a check card feels weird, especially with those nonsense electronic pens.  I used to get A's in penmanship in school.  When I worked in business, the big (lazy) bosses would always ask me to address their holiday cards.  Which I didn't mind because someone else did my work while I just wrote them lol. But now, I hate to write, and I think its a shame, because writing longhand can be so relaxing and creative.  Signs of the times lol

Yes...same here, and you wrote it so well...cute and funny and wistful, all rolled in one.

Thank you, indeed.

I wrote my first two books in longhand...don't know how I did it.

Anita You are so right! I can't even understand my own writing anymore. I'm ashamed at the way my signature, which used to get compliments, is now illegible;-) Thank you for writing this, I thought it was just me;-)methinks we need to start from scratch, you know with the circles;-) hahaha

Love,
ET

I'm like the caveman with the wheel

Cavemen needed lots of practice. Get that old pencil out, and a huge supply of cookies, and start writing again!

Well said. The trick is to never lose the art of writing whether bad or good because with it will go the way of mankind one day.....

I still write poems out longhand before posting. That way I don't forget. Well done, Lady Pax, this is spot on!

The scribbles of Eistein were illegible as well. I love your way with words. I can stand in front of my mirror and recite your poem for all the same reasons.
Love,
Susan

My handwriting always did look like a doctor scribbling a script, so I can't really tell the difference . . .
