Cold cleaves to warm cheeks
with the rippling of autumn’s breath
Chickadees chirp their song
Chick a dee dee dee
We wander among the carpet of leaves
finding a fallen tree
we sit upon it with laughter and smiles
sitting closer to absorb our warmth
A breath, which floats in
as the epitaph of the sun setting
on the horizon in its warmth of colors,
as does the melding of two hearts
An echo of birds in the distance
their farewell before flight
unto their nests
to wrap wings of warmth
Autumn cloaks the ground
with her array of beauty
to protect the earth’s new buds
For new birth during dormancy
For shall we also hide
This budding as autumn
Challenges the trees
in preparation of what is to come…

What you wrote about the chickadees was especially revealing. When I was young in the forest in the dead of winter, it would often be very quiet except for the sound of crows calling in the distance. But then there would be these chickadees that would come around with their happy sound, “chick a dee, dee, dee.. as they search for bugs and made the silent landscape happy. Thanks for the memory.
