“We can reject everything else: religion, ideology, all received
wisdom. But we cannot escape the necessity of love and compassion....
This, then, is my true religion, my simple faith. In this sense, there is no need
for temple or church, for mosque or synagogue, no need for complicated
philosophy, doctrine or dogma. Our own heart, our own mind, is the temple.
The doctrine is compassion. Love for others and respect for their rights and
dignity, no matter who or what they are: ultimately these are all we need.
So long as we practice these in our daily lives, then no matter if we are
learned or unlearned, whether we believe in Buddha or God, or follow some
other religion or none at all, as long as we have compassion for others and
conduct ourselves with restraint out of a sense of responsibility, there is
no doubt we will be happy.” ~Dalai Lama XIV~
Skinned knees and teardrops
I fell and skinned my knee
you saw and came to me
your heart had suffered to
I was the one who knew
What joy can there be shared
when suffering is there
where the child works for their own
the enlightened for all unknown
You taught me all I know
my tiny hand in tow
you opened up my heart
For others to take part
Teardrops upon my cheek
your finger wiped for me
I hold them in their sorrow
with love like no tomorrow
I gave out my last change
and lunch I gave away
I gave them my own coat
an arm to hold them close
“Learn at a very young age to develop compassion, understanding for others, animals and sentient beings for only this can bring us the tranquility and happiness we all seek.” ~Lily of Lough Neagh~
Some learn compassion at an early age and some never do. It is truly something all need to share both giving and receiving at some point in here life. Insightfully written and wonderfully crafted poem.
Compassion is a quality of our Creator that we are bestowed with in his image...it is a beautiful facet that distinguishes the warmth of our hearts. Beautiful work.

A person without compassion is only a walking shell, hollow inside. With compassion one can fill the world with colors and rainbows for self and others.
Without compassion one cannot really learn to love; compassion is needed in all relationships big or small. Animals love us for the love and compassion we show them and we reap the rewards by having unconditional love from them. I could go on, for the subject matter is never ending, but I will close by telling you what a beautiful, well thought out poem you have written. Kudo's to you, Lily.
I was one of those kids with a bloody knee all the time, still have scars. Not that you needed to know that but, this poem was wonderful and the quote perfect.
I thought that you had written the front piece, until I saw it credited to the Dalai Lama. But the poem and the epilogue are equally direct and encouraging.
A person who has not compassion within themselves walks inside a darkness. That darkness can, and will, choke them in the end. Compassion has always been my one shinning light throughout the darkness which swallowed me during those lost decades. I kept it alive, therefore I found a way out of those dark days. Compassion, my one redeeming virtue, but it was enough.

This is beautiful and a great lesson for everyone. The way you combine the wisdom of the Dalai lama with your own wise words is sublime.
I will read this every day, over and over again.
New Poetry by Lily of Lough Neagh a.k.a C. Dennis-Woosley
When two men hit the reset button and decide to go out looking for the good in the world, they not only find it but also a lot more.
P.S. The title is listed on Amazon under Look for Something Good by Robert Drews (not by Robert H. Drews)
These song lyrics and art are tales, tides and twinkling lights - tunes telling stories of warmth and sun, city and sand, paths that lead, and the coins we can keep in the Karma Bank. Spirit's been bypassed for sorrow, dreaming of a better tomorrow .
