As is fairly said:
Life is a huge farce,
And human beings
Are all puppets in it.
A man who takes life
Too seriously and who
Obeys reading-room rules
Too thoroughly and who
Actually keeps off the lawn
Because a signboard says so,
Always makes a fool of himself
And is usually subjected to laughter
From his older friends and associates;
And since laughter is a contagious thing,
Very soon he becomes a humorist himself.
We really look upon life as a stage and the kind
Of theatrical show we like best is always high comedy,
Whether that comedy be a new constitution or a bill of rights
Or an anti-cannabis bureau or a disbandment conference. Hence,
We always enjoy it, but I wish mankind would sometimes be earnest.
Humour, above everything else, is ruining the world. One can have so much
Of that silvery laughter, for it is again the laughter of the old rogue, at the touch
Of whose breath every flower of romanticism and enthusiasm must wither and fall off.
enjoyed the read
I wish mankind would have integrity, as well being earnest.
Hang on. Good writing!
