Poem Artwork

I have heard of letting the world be so

And exercising forbearance,

But I have never heard of the way

Of governing the entire state

By virtue of someone's full authority.

The notion of 'letting be' comes out

From the fear that the people,

Once interfered with, will carry their nature

Beyond all norms and regulations;

The 'exercising forbearance' comes out

From the fear that the people,

Once not so dealt with, will alter specifics

Of their human habits.

When all the people do not carry their nature

Beyond the norms and regulations,

Nor alter dramatically their human features,

A good governing is secured for

The long-lasting job and common goodness.

Agree on all points. What fascinates, though, is how crisis divides, brings out the best and worst in all of us, initiates the search we "don't have time for" in periods of complacency. I see a world gradually recognizing that even our assumptions about human nature can't just lie fallow until the next crisis forces us to examine it.

The best book on governing I ever read was The Republic, written over 2000 years ago. Still, governing is a work in progress and never seems to fit all of the people, all of the time. So, we will continue to tinker.

as to Britain, the answer is: 'The Old Hand of Beijing'; as to the Texas, I doubt that there are some other economic reasons for 'the exit,' but their real chances, I believe, are next to nul. Cheers, alex

How the world has allowed itself to be governed down through history has been a question never properly answered on the ground and in the field. Just look at history to see how humanity has governed itself down through ages until now. And it is becoming more like a circus by the day. Not much forbearance nowadays. John
