He who discards

His thoughts of himself,

Acting only where

He has no other alternative,

And pursues it as his course

To be indifferent and pure

In his dealing with others --

This is who in high antiquity

Was named 'the low-lying vale'

Of community and the country,

But nowadays is called 'a saint.'

Being conscious of his limits,

Such one undertakes no charge

And laughs at those who value

Extravagant abilities and skills.

Remiss and evasive himself,

He does nothing and disallows

The greatest figures whom only

The world has known before

Throughout its long-term strife

And in the throes of progress.
