Poem was inspired by part of a verse from Paul's first leter to the Corinthians, ICor 15:10

I AM WHAT I AM

“By the grace of God
I am what I am.”
Not, Father, what anyone else
Would have me be,
Nor even that man
I want to be most.
I am what I am:
Living, being, becoming.
All ready there,
But not quite there yet
Only dimly aware
Am I of the man
You purpose me to be;
Scared of becoming,
But eagerly awaiting
The transformation,
Sometimes in cooperation,
Sometimes in grumbling;
Not trusting myself,
Sometimes not even trusting you,
I am becoming,
Inexorably, implicitly,
And in the becoming
I am now and will be the man
You created me to be.
