I have a lot of poems for lovers but there are those times when we have drifted apart in our lives. This poem commemerates such an occasion. Since I am an eternal optimist, this as in almost all of my works, ends on a positive note. Incidentally, my oldest daughter is named Summer, perfect for a double entendre.
MY POEM FOR GOODBYE
While we loved
Those years gone by
Our lives combined
In a special way
With the spirit of youth
We danced together
And we sang love songs
Throughout the night
We picked wild flowers
From spring gardens
We strolled among colored leaves
Which had fallen in the fall
I wrote you poems
About beaches and Summer
We shared our warmth
When winter called
So then, you came
To say goodbye
I could scarce
Believe my ears
Yet the emptiness
In our bed
Exposed this fork
In pathways past
So, with one last wave
Across new distance
Now alone
I walked away
And with nothing now
Left there for me
I sent you this one last verse
My poem for goodbye
There's a song, can't remember the name, about endings. I think it was "The First Hello, The Last Goodbye". It postulates that all human experiences begin to end as they begin. That certainly adds a poignancy to all relationships that they wouldn't have otherwise.

Steve, thank you for sharing this poem and the illustrations. The poem is melancholy, but well written. The illustrations are truly excellent.
