Pictures In The Attic

My Dad is gone, with both my parents dead

I stumble in attempts to catch my breath

And must remember how- and what they said

I was allowed to do upon their death.

The pictures in the attic, with much more;

The keys to let me step inside the past,

Their correspondence written way before

They built the chance to hold each other fast.

Each box I find a magic treasure chest-

A thousand jewels held up to the light.

I cannot take my leave from this and rest,

Far worth, for me, another sleepless night.

This is my mission, puzzle pieces, charms;

And keepsakes, some of which they kept from me-

They’re with me now and wrap me in their arms

With every single gift that I can see.

I lived by faith, but now my hopes are proved,

I come from love, these pictures cannot lie,

So from now on I’ll live with doubt removed-

And never fear the love in me will die.

Your writings have such a tone of softness to them... one that allows the heart and soul to feel your words and be a part of your world--feeling the feelings of which you write about. Keepsakes allow us to hold those feelings we treasure in our hands...making that which is intangible, tangible...

with every stanza i read, i could relate, understand your feelings, at times i felt i was invading my moms privacy till i ran across a picture of her and dad holding me as a baby between them, i treasure that picture, just as you treasure all the memories and keepsakes they left you, your words are beautiful and i enjoyed reading them and remembering...thank you
love and hugs

Excellant write John, my first attempt at a book was based on the letters my Dad wrote home during WWII and they didnt' lie either but they gripped my heart for a man who until I read those letters..didn't really know.

Superb poem,John! A tribute of love to your parents,nothing better than that! Funny how we become more familiar with time after they pass. I see my mother in the mirror,so often,especially faults like hers, I used to say I would never have;-)
