Innocence

It would have been nice

(and fine with me)

If my biological life had ended before my innocence.

I often wish it had been so.

Often- as I still see the eyes

Of my lovely bride-

Hear her laugh at our precious stories-

Remember the Tuesday night dates

Feeding deer in the park.

And our son- a miracle against all odds.

I didn’t need that miracle

To remind me to thank God every day for everything.

But if there was a God who could speak-

He would have said, “Not so fast.”

He could have told me how to save my family.

That was all I would have asked for.

So, Bipolar depression-

A family became a statistic-

A love story became a case history.

My son and I make it safely to shore.

My heart, still innocent- worried-

She is still out there.

But finally even innocence has departed…

No- she is nowhere.

I Love your expressions here John
I would also like to say that as for the bi-polar mood disorder
I am not sure, but it may be worth inquiring about
an organic therapy called EMDR, the brain is always wanting
to be in the healthy resolve of life.
It helps countless people through many situations.
Your can google EMDR.com
It is a sorrowful shame she suffers too...

How sad :( I think mental illness is so misunderstood, and it is hard, day in, day out, for the person with it, and the people around them. I am so glad that you wrote this, and honored to read it. If more people were upfront and real about these health issues, they wouldn't be pushed under the rug as they often are, as embarassing or weak. Excellent poem.

Loss can be a whole upset of events in a lifetime, John...somehow, we manage to pick up the pieces and wind up with enough scratch to still feed the deer, the doe, the buck, the fawn, a family and innocence is a bi-polar phrase within itself, as usually the dark and light of family dynamics and purity isn't often interchangeable and we have to find a balance...moving on is wise, but it is hard. Wishing you all the best for 2010! Blessed Be.

Love,
Sage

The tragedies of the world and the heart often are what make us who we are and also where we go in this world. We can let them bury us or embrace all the best of what was and let go of what was not...

Oh John, this is such a heart wrenching poem. So filled with sadness but still tells us about a remarkable man and his lost innocence.
Much peace, love, and light,
