Just As Well
There was a time, if she misunderstood-
I’d give my all to fix it if I could.
I needed so- to always make things right
So she would never worry through the night.
But this last time, with parting close at hand-
When she, my words did not quite understand,
Although it left her thinking less of me-
I somehow thought, “This time… I’ll let it be.”
Our parting would be difficult enough,
So I could hope it wouldn’t be so rough
If she thought less of me and what we had-
She could move on, and wouldn’t be so sad.
Sweet sorrow is a gift that will be mine-
And mine alone by my own heart’s design.
I’ll know the truth, in love, and wish her well-
Believing less than love, but I won’t tell.
