Years ago, when we worked different shifts, I used to leave my ex-wife notes in the morning. I just wanted some way to show her how much she meant to me. Sometimes when I really squeezed my heart the drops on the paper sure looked good to me. I even imagined she might keep them and make a book some day. Strange to me that there would not only be no book, but no marriage, and any notes would all vanish- perhaps put to the curb beside me.
But I do have a special friend, and the other day she was cheering me on in her usual way. Later, as I was thinking about her- one of the notes came back.

John, Somehow this is sad and at the same time very uplifting. We just can't stop our brains from doing their thing, can we? Even though my memory is simply awful these days, "Every once in a while," I still go back.
