There is no music playing, but I hear it anyway-
I’ve hiked a couple miles for this- and on the perfect day.
The world seems somehow more alive, I haven’t checked my phone-
But want to know the strangest thing? I swear I’m not alone.
It all just seems so different than it’s ever been before,
Perhaps another miracle but I’m not keeping score.
We seldom feel our heartbeats, but I’ll go out on a limb-
For I am feeling something- and I have to swear- it’s Him.
I laugh for I’m too old for this, and read enough to know-
What once were our most cherished dreams just always have to go.
So proud of all my reasons I’m so sure of what is real-
But here today life asks me to explain just how I feel.
I’m here in this strange heaven with its mountain peaks and pines,
And with this heart today that tells me- “Read between the lines.”
Today- there’s too much gratitude to toss it in the breeze-
The moss is too inviting for my rusty pair of knees.
With laws of relativity- it matters where you are,
And on my knees, I’m telling you- I’m seeing very far.
To hopes and dreams and wonders that transcend instead of end,
And I can share it all with my imaginary friend.
I thought that imaginary friends were the realm of childhood. But then, don't we approach childhood again at the end of our days?
I was reminded again of other dimensions that may be operating right alongside ours. Thereby you may be hearing someone that is right in the same space you are, but one dimension away.
I'm a devout non-believer, John, but that doesn't mean I'm not a spiritual person. Despite my skepticism, I very much enjoyed this poem of yours. I think you've summed most of it up perfectly here, since I've long maintained that the most beautiful cathedral in all the wide world is the world itself! For me, being in nature's embrace is like worshipping the spirit of whatever created this vast and unknowable experience we call life. Since I was brought up a good little Anglican, I can get away with this seeming contradiction, despite my avowed agnosticism, LoL. Good work!
