You have no idea- and I don’t know what to say-
This crazy game of loving seems to always end this way.
When words don’t seem to matter, and the tears don’t seem at all.
I shake my head and wonder as I watch the curtain fall.
It all just seemed so sure this time- as if it had to be.
And I fell on my knees to thank our God for you and me.
We darkened doors of heaven just so sure we would get in,
But something seemed to happen, and it had to be a sin.
I look around the emptiness that haunts in every room-
And close my eyes and swear I somehow smell your sweet perfume.
You’ll never be a memory, you’ll always be my heart-
Though broken it cries out to say that we can’t be apart.
The silence is the worst of all, your laughter used to sing-
And I was all prepared to go and buy that diamond ring.
How could life have tripped us up and what unplugged the cord?
And left me here just wishing I had fallen on a sword?
The sun keeps coming up each day as if it doesn’t know-
The way love is supposed to be- it’s not allowed to go.
At night I lie and listen to the beating in my chest
And cry myself to sleep in what’s supposed to be our nest.
Nightmares should be fleeting things with endings soon enough,
I don’t see how the waves of life could ever be this rough.
I’ll keep on falling to my knees but haven’t got a prayer,
And no idea how to live when I don’t see you there.
I have an idea, a complete picture after reading such a well done piece. Even being understood though, could never take away the heartfelt pain expressed here.
You made me feel your pain with this very honest and clear poem of loss. I don't know if she left you or she died, but either way it's sad when someone we love so much is gone.
I think the hyphens (-) at the end of some words could be removed. But I don't understand is a very clear rendition otherwise, "We darkened doors of heaven…"
Eloquent and poignant, John. You've managed to cobble together quite a paean to the elegant simplicity and comfort of 'that' person who is all we need to complement our lives, but whom the fates have been moved to take out of ours. Nicely done! -K2
