there is such beauty in your expression, that your words soar above
this…and the overall impression is of a heightened sense of calm and
peaceful questioning…
Your beautiful rhymes never cease to amaze me. Whether or not this is just artistry or real thoughts about a lost love, makes no difference. The poem is universal and inspiring if even in a rather negative way.
Very romantic and melodic, and full of longing. I especially like this line: “Hearts where hopeless wishes cling.” Neat way to write that concept. ~~ djl
Very evocative, John. It immediately brings to mind similar long walks I once took through the frosty, snow-draped woods of a North Dakota winterscape, flanking the Souris River. While I wasn't at that time reflecting on matters of the heart, I was certainly in a soulful enough state of mind, with every nerve and fiber of my body caught up in the sharp fragrance of the pines (and strangely enough, also of creosote) and the biting sting of the 20-below temperature. I wasn't 'there' where you were in this reminiscence, certainly, but I was THERE in those northern woods and it was both an electric and melancholy experience that stays with me some 56 years later. Contrary to what Gertrude Stein so famously remarked about Oakland (California), and in reference to North Dakota winters, there IS a THERE, there... Thanks for being such an expressive poetic catalyst!
