Living in Africa allows me to be witness to the incredible beauty of this land with its panoply of landscapes and wild life. It is a beautiful land but a cruel one too. This poem has a deeper meaning than what you might see on the surface. I'd like to see if someone picks it up.

The cat emerges quietly from the moving shadows
Silhouette branches sway as many birds take flight
The hollow moon sails high into the dark cerulean sky
And brilliant stars cast their own ethereal light

She crouches down, a sleek and puissant creature
Her nostrils straining to catch a scent upon the breeze
Motionless and yet alert with every muscle straining
While the cries of her hungry cubs rise in plaintive pleas

An injured kudu limps along the fringes of the water
Thick crimson blood streaming from her wounded flank
Hyenas skulk about, their bloodstained faces grinning
Demonic eyes gleaming from the edges of the riverbank

Suddenly, the cat, in a lightening blur of mercurial motion
Brings down the doe with its rolling fear-crazed eyes
She takes a grip upon its throat, choking off its breath
And without a fight, in almost frozen acquiescence, it dies

The startled scavengers quickly scatter in all directions
The struggle is over and the mighty feline queen has won
She drags the still warm kill, her muscles tired & trembling
To feed her ravenous cubs & sleep, her job for now is done

You put me there. I stood frozen in time watching the story unfold.
I have witnessed this scenario many times on television but, you
brought it to life in my mind’s eye -- breathtaking, suspenseful
anticipation, reality come alive.

Hugs, Susan

such an interesting idea of the cat emerging form the shadows, almost like one of the lil crabs, on seashore, that dwells in a covered hole, he is unsuspected, hollow moon = no value, the leaves warn, and does the birds, and the stars would be those who point it out, 2nd verse how one kills because of need, I have a real feelig for animals, so it hurts me to read of someone wounded, limping, even an animal, I could feel his pain, his attempt to grasp, find a way, in his own woundedness, it almost makes me cry, and of course the uncaring gathered about, leans, spry, the trembling in the arms of the lion made me think, almost as if she didn't want to, of course I dohn't think a lion thnks that, but maybe her body did, this was very nice Chanti, t let us in on this secret, yoiu hae witnessed, al

Chanti, on the merit of the fantastic write alone, it is a pure masterpiece of beyond comparison, Poet. I read this gripping write last night, but, my brain had completely shut down. Although when I read this powerful piece, my take on it was, I thought it represented the struggle of a single Mother who has been through hell and back for the sake of raising her children. No matter what obstacles were placed in front of her she was unwavering in meeting the challenges. I am not very familiar with the polices of South Africa, other then knowing it has its problems like most of the other countries on this spinning planet. I do know by reading your brilliant work, I have come to appreciate you and your views all the more so. I apologize if I do not fully understand the blight of the African nation and her people. Outstanding work my friend. May everything work out for you and yours.

Government, government, government (well, until the last line, that is...) Or it could simply be about "people". Or, it could be about AIDS. This could be applied to many situations. Regardless, a teriffic write.

Chanti...champion of verbiage...this is spectacular
in its images and double entendres!
Perhaps I am reading more into this work than you
intended, but (aside from the natural order of things in
the animal world), I can see "animal-like governments" taking
oppressive actions against the hungry, the weak and helpless,
and using the meager resources of these impoverished ones to
fill their coffers...taking, taking, taking...until the Innocents
are bled dry...and the beautiful land of Africa withers in defeat.

Hey,now, I didn't intend to wax so philosophic, but you did ask
for what we, the readers, "found" in this beautifully crafted poem.
And the picture...the text over the fur...Awesome!!!

The art is fantastic, and enhances your superb poem! I see
the duality of nature at work as it is with all of Creation-good/bad/light/dark-etc. It shows that all things are
created for a purpose and they must do what they are born to do. In the end all things will come out right, even if we can't see it now.
That's my humble take on it Chanti-;-).

My mom says ‘If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything’. Sorry mom but under the guise of poetic license I penned these beauties.
