I climbed the unyielding rock face,
in the searing heat at noon
gripping at the crevices and cracks
with white-knuckled fingers
Feet clinging precariously
to that vertical wall.
Not daring to look down.
Too tired to look up.
When I reached the top,
I fell weeping to my knees
Exhaustion seeping from every pore.
Even though I'd made it,
there was no joy inside
I was too afraid I'd die,
in that lonely place.
I only climbed it because,
as far as I could see,
there was only one way down.
And that way was to the leap!
How I needed to take that leap
to conquer my fears and fly.
Because we only understand the value of life
when we're willing to die.
And then I saw it
This priceless thing -
Growing in a cleft.
So exquisite and unique
I could only gasp with wonder -
at that perfect gift.
Life.
You know that moment
when you hold your breath,
because you’re afraid
your very breathing
will blow it all away?
That's how I felt that day.
So, there I was suspended
in a seemingly liquid moment
amorphous in its formless state.
Wondering if I should
pluck it from its place
or let it stay.
As I struggled with a strong desire
to own that beauty for my own,
I finally got it
and I knew what I must do -
leave it alone!
I didn't take it away
I took it in
Where it would stay.
Oh, and it was marvelous.
Like the taste of dew
upon a long-parched tongue
The feeling of a gentle hand
upon love-starved skin.
A coruscating light
that in its brilliance
dispels all darkness
So profound,
it overtakes the night.
I took the leap that day.
And the miracle lives on
It lives within…
