Sometimes, Always, Never
By John Herlihy

We remember.
We forget.
Often sometimes.
Never always.

Sometimes I remember.
Sometimes I forget.
Often I remember I forgot.
Often I forget I remembered.

Sometimes I forget to remember.
Sometimes I remember to forget.
Often it is better to remember.
Often it is better to forget.

Sometimes I remember to be faithful.
Sometimes I forget to be good.
Often I remember to be honest.
Often I forget to be brave.

Good things I remember.
Bad things I forget.
Falling leaves in September.
Losing a friend in regret.

Happiness is something to remember.
Regret is something to forget.
Loyalty is something to remember.
Treachery is something to forget.

Always remember my loving mother.
Never forget my now departed brother.
Always remember the living.
Never forget the dead.

Our repentance we sometimes remember.
Our ingratitude we sometimes forget.
Our helpfulness we often remember.
Our stubbornness we often forget.

Let us always remember.
Let us never forget.
Never remember to forget.
Never forget to remember.

I think I forgot something.
Now I remember:
Never forget to remember,
Always remember you forgot.

yes, the whole point here is about the human dual nature. When we speak of the heavens we mean the earth and vice versa; when we speak of the paradise we mean the hell. . . so, to remember and forget is what we need to keep ourselves healthy, like the sun and moon, day and night that alternate each other. . . but only the human being are doomed to confusional insanity, I guess. whether a good fortune or misfortune, never mind; the whole point is about ‘blame’ and ‘regret’; one who is able to cope with them is a truly powerful person. An important thing is drawn to our attention in this ‘crazy’ poem ;)) Cheers, alex

Our brains are designed to help us forget the bad and emphasize the good in our lives as we age. You have portrayed this in a poem like a twisted, turning page.
