The light appears and disappears,
From dawn to dusk to dawn again,
Magnificent in all its brilliance,
A furnace, then a boomerang,
Life-giving and full of warmth,
Father’s blanket and mother’s milk.
A perpetual circle,
Of darkness and light,
Creating morning, noon and night,
Born of a blazing star,
That shines nearby, not distant,
It twinkles not from afar.
The light is a symbol of life,
Breathing of light and darkness.
At dawn, birds chirp its arrival,
A thin strip of hope and survival.
It journeys in seconds and minutes,
Eternity’s child making footsteps in time.
Dusk represents another matter.
The fading light goes pitter patter.
The light steps diminish in sound,
Until run down into the ground.
Light bids the day her ancient farewell,
Promising to return after night’s interlude.
The dawn, will she ever return?
I speak of the light’s sojourn,
Whose sun will forever burn,
As the earth’s faithful friend.
It arrives on the heels of darkness,
Putting the day in the palm of her hand.
I really enjoy your poetry John. You are a deep and emotive poet who knows how to effectively use description and metaphor. This is lovely work that touches the heart and the senses. Regis if you agree with the tone and message of this article you could not be the man of peace and love I have always thought you to be.
Until only very recently, since Copernicus, have humans understood what the sequence of light and dark was.
