Call this the age of grief,
We have given up the age of belief.
There is no world of tomorrow,
We live in a world of sorrow.
We are hanging by threads,
Our world tears us to shreds.
Sagebrush roams thru our hearts,
Blown by the wind far apart.
We are down on our knees,
We beg only for mercy.
Our feet no longer on the ground,
We no longer feel safe and sound.

Our ears ring a sour note,
Our hearts rise up to our throat.
Flames burn with every beat,
Intelligence no longer takes its seat.
The world is broken in two
People no longer have a clue
They must accept their due.
My hands are made of fire,
My eyes are full of desire,
My tongue is thick with briars.
Only one road is open,
Made of brittle bones.

My ears are caverns of sound,
In my nose bad smells go around,
I taste seaweed run aground.
Thorns serve as my brand,
Brambles are threaded in strands,
As in the matted wool of lambs.
Thistles stick in my throat,
Silence protects my castle’s moat.
I no longer expect much in life,
The world is full of strife.

Ron mentions that fear is our enemy...these fears are more
concrete. Terrorists bombarding counties, not really knowing
where they will hit next. Soft targets using fewer men...sounds
pretty scary to me!
This is certainly a pessimistic view of what could be the most enlightened century yet.
This seems rather uncharacteristic of you because of your great knowledge of history. When we compare the similar 15 years of the 20th century, we only have intimate knowledge about what was happening in the United States and Europe… The start of a very bloodied and senseless, "war to end all wars." We had abuse of immigrants and child labor. We had riots. We had women without the vote. Diseases ran rampant through the population. Around the world, millions died in various calamities. We got the news a month or two later and didn't care because it didn't affect us.
Once again, fear is our enemy. The immediacy of the news makes us think that we are in danger when we are not. We can and are solving our problems more rapidly than ever before. There are those that wish not to solve problems, but the young always come along and solve them without the foot dragging of the old.
You betcha, John, the world has gone insane for real. Terrorist abound and they are being let into this country by the thousands I fear because of our open borders . . .
Though I tend towards optimism, I do believe we are living in the worst of times because of all the turmoil in the world. It forces me to burrow inside my own microcosm and dwell there. As you put it--"we are no longer safe and sound" and so much more through your detailed imagery.
