Dedicated: To an unknown child who brought the world to its knees.
Disgrace
By John Herlihy
I
Lying alone, face down;
Blue sea mocks blue sky,
The earth sandy brown,
Color all around.
Still trusting, as if sleeping,
A child no longer peeking,
No longer weeping.
Washed up in exile,
Like driftwood on a beach,
Where little feet no longer reach,
On some distant shore,
Ocean waves in protest roar.
II
An innocent child,
Abandoned, silent and still,
Under the light of the sun,
Nestled now in God’s palm.
Angels sing a solemn psalm.
In disgrace, the world covers its eyes,
The weight of evil bows its heavy head.
The world brought to its knees,
To genuflect in reverence,
Looking one last time,
Upon the beatific face.
Universal shame falling
On the human race.
