The Senses Awaken
By John Herlihy

The senses awaken;
We are not forsaken.
The senses inspire;
They set us on fire.

I
I hear bells,
Their sweet melody is charming.
I hear snow,
Its silence is becalming.
I hear the gale of the wind,
Its howl is alarming.
I hear hello,
It friendly sound is warming.
I hear goodbye,
Its final note is sounding.

II
I smell the wind,
Its odors soothing for my heart’s sake.
I smell incense,
Filling the soul with its ethereal wake.
I smell water,
Honest and fresh as sunlight on dew.
I smell orchids,
Their heavenly odor to woo.
I smell smoke,
Autumn leaves burn their abundant hue.

III
I see a bird at sea,
The safety of land will soon be upon us.
I see the lily pad,
The benevolent flower watches over us.
I see the earth,
The sun, air, and water assaults us.
I see the trees, the lake, the land,
Their smile burns us.
I see the bounty of nature,
Its soul fills us.

IV
I taste happiness,
Its bliss has nothing to compare.
I taste misery,
Whose despair has no possibility to share.
I taste loneliness,
Its solitude is at times difficult to bear.
I taste sorrow,
Its cloak I have no desire to wear.
I will taste death,
There is no need to despair.

V
I touch the flowers,
They touch me in return.
I touch my loved one,
May my emotion never be spurned.
I touch my children,
For whom my heart burns.
I touch the world,
To influence its concerns.
I touch the heavens,
For whom my heart yearns.

What would be do, without the five senses?
Where could we go, there would only be fences?
These are God’s instruments to experience the outer world;
They lead us out of ourselves and beyond into a higher world.

yes, "they lead us out of ourselves," but to get "beyond into a higher world" we need to make them reach the end of their service and fire them down to ash. As is fairly said, the five senses pile up the five fences! Again, a lovely organized piece of ballad, John. Cheers, alex

We humans are not the only ones with these wondrous senses that are absolutely required for life. In fact, our senses, in many respects are greatly inferior to other members of the animal kingdom. Those senses in the animal kingdom, right down to an amoeba that senses its environment, result in positive, lifesaving action.

Only humans have a brain that can process all this sensory information and then make serious mistake about what it means in their brains. When the animal kingdom acts stupid, it dies. When humans act stupid, they often get saved and sometimes are called to lead.
