The Feel of the End
By John Herlihy

I know when things begin to close down;
The lights go off, the shutters pulled to the ground.
I know when things begin to take on the feel of the end;
You can count on one hand the names of any friend.
Things take on a blurry edge that makes you feel lost;
Distant memories are resurrected at considerable cost.
Sentiments emerge within that feel like a funeral dirge;
Happy memories of the past no longer come forward in a surge.
Sleeping with the night lights off, there are no childish fears left;
The ravages of time have taken their toll, feeling bereft.
As a child, everything takes on the appearance of big;
In old age, one’s thinning hair is covered with a fashionable wig.
I trekked through a mountain wilderness for the last time;
I rode rapids through a canyon gorge through twilight shine.
Every time I bid someone goodbye it feels like forever;
Making plans for the future evoke hushed whispers of never.
Twilight and dusk provide the furnishings of my new home;
The veil of the night offers dark alleyways thru which to roam.
It feels like the end except for one remarkable little feature;
My hand is in God’s hand; I am His blessed, human creature.
The end is but a beginning in which new worlds are foretold;
All mystery will be revealed and untold secrets will quietly unfold.

And even for a secular believer, there indubitably exists the ongoing character of existence. For whether by ash or dust, existence knows no end and is destined to re-invent itself for the next iteration of the "you" passing through this life's unique experience into whatever reformation awaits. For the Zen in me, the "untold secrets" is the show in perpetuity.

An emotional view of life's last chapter. While I disagree with the hopeful ending, I admire the honesty of closing in of time.
