The Future Now Past
By John Herlihy

A shy child,
A mischievous boy,
A confused adolescent,
A mature man in his prime,
The past another world in decline.
Memories stir
That leave me aghast.
I don’t know the person
I see in the mirror of the past.
Blink and memory disappears
Without reason or rhyme.
To fashion a future
From images in the past,
To awaken dead memories
That no longer last.
Dusk gives way to night,
Just as dawn gives way to light.
Memories be gone!
They have no place in hindsight;
Even the future is now already past.

Poets rely greatly on their memories and past experiences. So it's no wonder that you keep returning and wondering why? It looks like you're certainly not letting the future pass you by. By writing a poem every day, you're certainly keeping up.

At some point all of us are merely, or perhaps completely, the sum of our memories ... but will be still be chasing them after we've gone? Is that where we go?

the past is considered to be direct motion while the future the reverse from now, . . memories and anticipations respectively -- that's what the present provides us with. For this reason "the future is now already past" to be the three in one; yes, at large, time is oneness. The focal point, John. Cheers, alex

Yeah you're right, John, but sometimes those memories are so conflicted and strong, they are difficult to tear ourselves away from them.
