Breathe in, Breathe out
By John Herlihy

Breathe in for the first time, surrounded by next of kin;
Breathe out one last time, on the face hopefully one last grin.
Many off-the-path miles have gotten roughly in the way.
Beginning with hope and promise with a lot more to say.
Ending often in doubt and despair with very little to say,
Questioning and analyzing all that comes along the way.
Breathe in, to sing the song of life full of beauty and verve;
Breathe out, to sigh a sad note only frogs in the swamp heard.
You thought you had the stuff that dreams are made of;
But your dreams just disappeared in life’s endless trade off.
Breathe in life, sparkling bubbles that burst magically in the air;
Breathe out destiny, paving your path to a distant somewhere.
The peaks and troughs of a life that is only ours to unfold;
The wave of life cresting then breaking as each destiny is told.
We breathe in life’s mystery how many countless times;
We breathe out life’s challenges in alternating rhymes.
A hundred thousand intakes of breath fill life’s balloon;
A hundred thousand out-takes of breath end in a swoon.
The spirit becomes the soul becomes the breath of earthly life;
The breath becomes the soul becomes the spirit of eternal life.

These lines almost perfectly describe how I've lived most of my life. However, I'm happy to say that I'm working hard to turn it in a different direction, and I think I'm succeeding!

Breathing is a wonderful thing and your poem counts the ways. In spite of that, I have often wondered why so many authors don't know the difference between breath and breathe. ;-)

My sparkling bubbles don't burst..........they just are. Breathe in the courage and put it to work. I love the way you allow the soul to be thought of as a "spirit".........possessing a little more "clout" perhaps? 'Love this!

Love ya!

the last two lines are good enough to be a completely beautiful short verse with a longrunning content. Cheers, alex

Well, John, you have amazingly capsuled our journey through life with the "Breathe In, Breathe Out" method. I was especially captured by this . . .

"You thought you had the stuff that dreams are made of;
But your dreams just disappeared in life’s endless trade off"

Wonderful, indepth writing.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
