How Old Is Old
By John Herlihy

What age am I?
I have no idea.
They tell me I am old,
Borrowed, bent, sold;
But that’s not how I feel,
The age number is not real.
When I entered my first decade,
My infant antics set a record.
I crawled, talked, walked early,
My hair curly, my attitude surly.
When I entered my teens,
The world was there to greet.
When I entered my 20s,
The world was now at my feet.
When I entered my 30s,
All I accomplished was astute.
When I entered my 40s,
My arrogance made me a brute.
When I entered my 50s,
I was feeling the worse for wear.
When I entered my 60s,
I had an unexpected death scare.
When I entered my 70s,
My life finally became a prayer.
When I entered my 80s,
My body was still there.
When I entered my 90s,
My heart was still aware.
I am waiting for my 100th year,
When my soul has no fear.

"How Old Is Old?" in deed an interested question!
Maybe it's the same like saying: how long is a long time,
or how far is far, how cold is cold, how hot is hot, etc
I hope that you'll reach that 100 +
Thanks for sharing, John!

You seem to have written a very personal account of what happens to everyone. Some weather it better than others like Frank Sinatra's famous, It Was a Very Good Year. If you are in your 90s as suggested, with your prolific output, I would say you are doing something very right.

Yesterday, in the National Geographic, I saw the picture of a man, a twin like me, who is 99 and first tracked grizzly bears in Yellowstone with electronic tracking devices in the 1950s. He and his brother first pointed out that the Yellowstone ecosystem was much larger than the national park and needed protecting. He looked to be younger… Like 70. I am amazed. I also saw a video on the news of a young lady at 100 who recently set the record for the fastest 100 m dash for her age.

as is said, "be till 120 of yours," the proper number for a proper person. . . if so, it means that the watershed falls on 50-60s, the crucial point when you "felt the worse for wear before having an unexpected death scare. . ." so, jogging, man, jogging. . . swim and go to gym ;)) Cheers, alex

I never thought I would live to be into my mid-seventies, but here I am. I feel very fortunate that I can still get around as well as I can. That, plus the fact that my physical being has, so far, not deteriorated as many my age have. I feel blessed that is the case. Thoroughly enjoyed your poetry today, John.

I'm a firm believer that "age" has no number. It merely creates a timeline for us to reflect back on, assess, rectify if we can, and persevere the best we can moving forward. It's even better if we don't feel "the worse for wear."
