People ask me if I believe in reincarnation,
The soul essence passing to the next generation.
Yes, I tell them, because the idea makes sense,
There is not enough time in one life for recompense.
In one life we need to transcend what makes us weak;
We lack certain virtues making our present life seem bleak.
Wouldn’t it have been wonderful to be Don Juan,
A multitude of children in the world to spawn.
Wouldn’t it have been terrible to be born Prince Albert,
He died young and may have been reborn as Herbert.
A destiny to be forgotten alas, never to be resurrected
Either in this life or some other life completely unexpected.
When I reflect more un reincarnation, I am force to reply;
No, I don’t think so, as I gaze for an answer within the sky.
I don’t believe in fairy tales whose idea makes no sense;
There are many other things to believe in of our origins whence.
We have one life to earn ourselves a higher state of perfection,
Not to fight the waves in the depths of the universal ocean.
You can speculate ad infinitum, even if it leads to the brink,
Play one idea against the other, no matter what you think.
Truth has its own reality; nothing else of value is at stake;
It matters next to nothing what the restless mind may create.
We are virtual nomads wandering idly in a dusty, rugged land,
Exiles from a paradise where we were guided by a loving hand.
I have no need to save my lost memories to know who I am;
Lost memories will give me no place in God’s mysterious plan.
It is who I truly am in the present moment that makes me think
That my memories can fall over the edge into the deep, dark brink.
I may make mistakes, rise up again, stumble to my knees and fall;
I am a soul in the making, one, unique, I am not a memory at all.
I have found that everyone has the right to believe what they want to believe and I never try to change their mind. I have faith in my Beliefs and would not like anyone to try and change mine
Reincarnation and heaven are nice constructs for those who wasted the most productive time of their lives, their youth, resulting in regrets for things unaccomplished. Those two escapes give them "faith" that their misguided life will be either corrected or improved in the future.
Those of us who have lived this life well have no need for future expectations except the peaceful death where our atoms and molecules will find their way into other forms and perhaps even other humans, but not in the way that wishful thinking would have it.
