The Sanctity of the Day
By John Herlihy

Dawn proclaims the presence of light;
Twilight heralds the arrival of night.
Celestial orbits create a reverse gateway,
To preserve the sanctity of night and day.

No thieves in our pay,
No temptations to lead us astray,
Nothing has the right to disturb
The sanctity of the day.

Raw passions will run their course;
Feeble hopes will rise from remorse.
Ashes and soot may ride the wind,
Still sanctity will have its day.

Religious scruples may keep us in check;
Evil actions inspire nothing but regret.
Organ peals may shake the rooftops,
Only sanctity can save the day.

Cowardly terrorists dare to seize the day,
Heartless people breed fear and dismay.
The blast echoes, the smoke clears,
Without sanctity, the day will give way.

Dangers surround us impossible to avert;
Risks on the battlefield refusing to desert.
Courage is a line drawn in invisible ink,
Lacking sanctity, the day will lead to the brink.

Fortitude builds within us secure walls;
Patience awaits until circumstance calls.
The heart resounds rhythmically beat by beat;
Without virtue, the day is at someone’s feet.

Shadows will linger without any light,
Creating monsters hidden from sight.
Wind carried turmoil, invisible but still there,
Farewell sanctity, broken beyond repair.

this strong rhyme becomes stronger but the pulsating rhythm steadier. The form pushes forward the substance of this hard subject, which represents as the core of vitality and power of faith. The latter is defined as something elusive and vague, but within it contains a series of imagery skilfully pictured above by a line drawn in quite a visible ink. Cheers, alex

I didn't know that sanctity had such power over us until I read this poem. And then, the last line takes a drastic turn to the worst. Do you fear that?

This poem holds many truths and is a good lesson in living. I do believe I'll make a copy for each of my grandchildren and frame them.

Love ya!

Another indepth piece of fine penmanship, John. Each line in this poem is a stand alone line.
