Long ago, I gave up on wishes;
Dreams are what make my day.
I have given up forever pretending,
That wishes will change my way.
Wishes are not realistic;
They are idle and vain.
I wish until I feel fatalistic;
Then I end up feeling only pain.
I wish for a pot full of money;
I am a bear wishing for honey,
Pots of it galore, honey and money,
Hoping to make my world sunny.
Sometimes I dream of a world,
Where I do everything with all my might,
Where I am ready all injustice to fight,
Where blessing covers everything in sight.
But that is a dream worth dreaming,
Not just the makings of a forced weaning.
I now know better than to ever wish,
For something that life can simply squish.
Ah, but dreams will live on forever;
They enrich our every endeavor.
When we die and cash in our chips,
The spirit exiting thru our trembling lips.
Only our earthly dreams will be broken,
As we leave behind what our lives betoken.
Then our souls will not be forsaken,
Into our dreams, we will awaken.
A poem showing and knowing the difference between wishes and dreams.
Got me thinking about how I now have what I couldn't even have wished for 50 years ago. I now have what kings and queens couldn't have wished for 100 years ago. I eat exotic foods every day. I have enough money to live on for the foreseeable future without scrambling. I communicate with people all over the world for free by merely picking up the telephone or entering a few words on the Internet. I publish entire books with my voice and never have to pick up pen and paper at all. This is the stuff of dreams that I never dreamt or even wished for.
In spite of tragedies that happen and will happen, it's a wonderful life we lead and your poem reminds us that it is so.
One of several fine works in the past couple of days. Must be something in the atmosphere, or maybe we all just have to turn away from actual events. Very nice, John. Something to pack for 'the voyage' ...
Your are so right. Wishes don't require much imagination, but dreams, require an entire arena. I was wondering how you would end your poem (very difficult to do with panache). What a finish! What an imagination! Perfect!
Inspirational poetry, written from the heart and soul. Verses that are well-suited for reading on a rainy day and that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
To enrich our every endeavor wishes and dreams
are the keys to our spirit. Lovely thoughts!
