Holding On
By John Herlihy

Sometimes, we need to let go in order to hold on;
Sometimes, we need to take a breath to move on.
A voice echoes within that we never heard before;
The rusty hinges begin to creek on the open door.
Our destiny has a way of taking an unwanted turn;
A clear, crisp morning can darken on news to spurn.

Clouds have the power to block the sun;
A trick of words stumbles upon a silly pun.
A veil shrouds our mind blocking the beauty in our eyes;
A moody presence takes over with its fearsome lies.
An invisible hand has the power to move the trees;
Instead, the wind in the willows is what one sees.

Ghosts gather unexpectedly in the blackest night,
Hoping to scare us individually into a frenzied fright.
Bad news crawls over the horizon to blankly stare,
Slipping into our mind and heart a thing difficult to bear.
The news mingles with our destiny in the sea of our souls,
As we tiptoe delicately at the edges of the sea’s shoals.

A sudden attack or dreaded illness comes to echo death;
The forewarning alone is enough to take away our breath.
Now wandering on a patch of dusty road and crying out;
A heart full of emotion suddenly reduced to a single shout.
Even if my every step turns into the beating of a drum,
I will hold on to myself from now until kingdom come.

You are certainly "holding up" very well with these insightful daily poems. This one is very familiar to those of us who have had to, at times, hang on with our fingertips just to make it on to the next day, week, year or more. It rings with a certain tenacity that says you will not, "go quietly into that deep dark night."

I think that the creak in the hinge is caused by too much creek water in the joints, or as those of us from the backward backcountry would say, the crick.

A man from Toronto, putting signs up along Canada 1 as it went west asked an old timer in a little village what the name of the creek outside of town was so he could name it.

The old man replied, "Oh, that's the crick."

The sign out side of town on the new highway crossing the stream read, "Crick Creek."

the word 'sometimes' at the beginning turns into the drum's beat of constancy. Actually, when we say 'sometimes' we often mean 'always,' just like the ocean and its waves these two words are. The news is a vessel to be into the storm and calm, so what's the reason to sit by the sea and wait for fair weather? For many of people, and it is good to keep in mind, the kingdom has already come. Amen. Cheers, alex

The need to let go of everything, to feel "real" fear in order to understand reality is a very necessary thing needed in order to accept the ultimate end. Yes, through it all one must hold on to themselves to get through it all!!! Dramatic imagery used to "catch" the reader's attention. 'Love it!!

Love ya!

Perhaps the most telling part of this gem is the last line, where the subtext of integrity so befits the spoken aloud. It is easy to forget that life doesn't deliver precious moments to be forgotten. Some, as you point out, stay with us, but many just impact our inner conscience and remain as assistance and stupor for noteworthy principals. You've captured it all in Holding On. Bravo!

You got it, John! Gotta hang on to what you got, and even if what you got is gone, hang in there with your memories.
