When You See
By John Herlihy

When you see a river,
You must follow it to its source.

When you see a mountain,
You must climb it to its peak, of course.

When you enter a cave,
You must find something worth remembering.

When you see a storm,
You must steal its thunder without surrendering.

When you see a mystery,
You must look beneath its skin.

When you see a ripe onion,
You must peel back its layers to get within.

When you see a walnut,
You must crack its outer shell

When you see a rainbow,
You must make a promise and never tell.

When you see a desert,
You must search to discover its well.

My life is my river
Whose source I already know

Life’s challenge is my mountain,
My destiny will help me grow.

These are a few of nature’s profound mysteries;
Virgin sentinels that witnessed primeval histories.

Loved the poem, but after reading it several times, do feel you might consider placing the "mystery" line just ahead of "My life is my river." I only suggest this because of what precedes and follows the "Mystery" line as its reads now are real life examples building to a metaphoric wrap up that when the "mystery" line is placed as suggested, the rest of the poem fulfills its subtle transition into the tabular spirt of the thoughts. Of course, this is just a suggestion to consider, you may have an argument for its placement of how it now reads I just missed. The overall message of the poem still comes through as wisdom seeking simple examples to share as some of the many paths we are confronted with. Well done.

Isn't it refreshing how mother nature encourages us to explore? Thanks for the uplifting poem. The only thing I would question is that I think that you hesitated about going deeply into the cave to discover its last crevice… Claustrophobia?

Yep, that is the name of our game. When we behold something we must, at all cost sometimes, look for its core.

Curiosity and perseverance empower us to face challenges and make discoveries. This is what sustains life and personal growth. Your poem weaves this message through the marvels of nature.
