I have no glories long forgotten;
Endurance is the treasure I have long begotten.
My ambitions have served me well in turn;
Failure has fallen across my path with a lesson to learn.
Desire for fame and fortune were never my currency;
It made me happy to speak a foreign language with fluency.
If anyone asked me what I have achieved,
I have a long list of poems that need no reprieve.
With no vain glories, I have nothing to forget;
Nothing to brag to friends about, nothing to regret.
I am told by others I do not look my age,
Balding crown and snow-white beard, in spirit a court page.
I take my life as it comes, one day at a time;
The sun rises and sets, whether or not the day has rhyme.
When I lay down at night on my pillow, it is enough,
To fall asleep quickly, feeling peaceful rather than gruff.
What I have accomplished was only mine to beget;
The rest I gladly give away, or easily forget.
From the beginning of my acquaintance with your poetry, I could sense the gentleness of your soul, the modesty of your perception of self, and the enormity of your talent. Keep writing as you do and you will be long remembered as one who came, who saw, and who left a legacy of honor, respect, and admiration by his contemporaries.
