I Take No Comfort
By John Herlihy

I take no pleasure in the comfort of familiarity;
I feel no satisfaction in monotonous similarity.
I find no special challenge in routine stability;
I soon get tired of the sameness of daily routines.
At times, I wish to smash my world into smithereens.

In the long run, I have no use for the purely temporal.
When the sands of time run out, what is left but the eternal.
Give me any day of the week the pungent taste of the unknown.
Fill me with the sacred and mysterious like a balloon fully blown.
Let me have a paradisal garden with flowers I planted on my own.

For now, I will make my way with feelings of being torn apart;
Separated from the Blessed and the Sublime, now back to the start.
When life was just beginning and I saw everything thru infant eyes.
Years later, I now know there is much of myself that I need to despise.
Weaknesses and limitations I need to overcome in order to be wise.

As such, I do take comfort in the mystery of the unknown;
Let it arrive on my doorstep every day of my life on its own.
I will lift the veil, take the leap, shed my skin until newly grown;
Give me the luxury of throwing my complacency to the wind.
I make no promises to others that in future I must rescind.

HMMM... BESIDE THE FACT THAT I'M A WOMAN AND YOU ARE A MAN WE ARE SO DIFFERENT IN THIS WAY OF THINKING. I'M A HOME BODY...ALWAYS HAVE ENJOYED THIS AND I DON'T LIKE CHANGE. BUT THERE YOU ARE...DIFFERENCES MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND...I TAKE COMFORT IN THIS FACT. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE. BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Lately your poems have all began to reveal parts of you. In this case, you are saying that you have always had to be on the move and changing, never satisfied with settling in the nest of conformity and routine like so many others do.

This can be good or bad. From you, I sense that there are parts of your past that you would like to reveal but find that those activities no longer favored and therefore can never be fully exposed in a poem or otherwise.

it sounds paradoxically (like this piece of poetry) but your weaknesses and limitations are actually your strong points (advantage); and that's the way to remove destructive regrets. As to the mystery, well cherished flowers will definitely bring the fruits. . . Cheers, alex

Embracing the unknown,
has its own reward.
When you don't know what's coming,
you're never bored.

Your first verse reminds me of why I can't stay married! LOL! Second verse, let me experience new things every day. Third verse: Hey! Let up on yourself, (wink). Last verse tells me that you just love a good adventure!!! Insightful poem!! I loved following it.

Love ya!

I appreciate the balance of routine familiarity and similarity tempered by adventure.
