Brief Encounter
By John Herlihy

We met but once,
A brief encounter that weighs but an ounce.
The little old women gave the appearance of being sly,
Not for a second could one take her for shy.
No one could tell you the true reason why;
I later found out that, as I suspected, she was Thai.
She must have been eighty if she was a day;
The wisdom of her life could be heard in what she had to say.

She greeted me warming as if she were my mentor;
She was an efficient receptionist at the Ayurveda Center.
Howdy, she said unexpectedly and with a mischievous wink;
Howdy, I answered in reply, with no time to sufficiently think.
She talked on and on about her trip to the US many years ago,
When she heard I grew up in Boston equally many years ago.
She made much of her Greyhound bus trip from New York City;
For her diminutive size, she was a grand dame, not a tired old bitty.

What struck me amid the friendly chatter was the unusual face;
A face she had earned that singled her out among the human race.
The ravages of time and the years created a map of wrinkled skin,
That framed her unique personality that was summed up in her grin.
Her eyes, like blue-grey marbles, shone out from her noble head;
Every gesture she made and word she spoke seemed highly bred.
It was a face that never gave up, with good will still left over to spare;
It was the face of a noble old women that was beyond compare.

The face of a young girl reached out from the wrinkled face of old time;
There are still a few people out there who reflect somehow the Divine.

I can completely relate, John; I have had more than one such "brief encounters" and each one is a treasure I shall never forget. Coincidentally, I posted a poem here at AD back in 2007 with that precise title. I think it relates very nicely to your verses here. Love and peace to you,

Regis

IT'S REALLY A BLESSING TO MEET AND HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE WHOM WE ENJOY HAVING SPENT TIME IN THEIR COMPANY, NO MATTER HOW BRIEF THAT TIME WAS OR HOW LITTLE WE REALLY KNOW OF THEM. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

A wonderful story poem about the lady who impressed you at her age, leaving you wonder what kind of young woman she had been. Oh how your poem touched me in so many ways. From my elderly friend and world traveler, Vitoon, whose face carried the roadmap of his storied life of time in the monastery through his higher education and tragic loss with scars of war. And my partner who has also had a storied life through war in Southeast Asia and has tackled the American culture with a gusto that helps retain her diminutive, but still youthful, exuberance as she gracefully ages.

A Beautiful recall of an experience that seems to had lasted through your life and work. Your description and sharing of her aura and personality was truly some of us could relate to, having had a like experience with the elderly such as this. Great story telling in the free verse.

How true, there are those among us who know far more than one would think possible. These are the "special" ones among us.

I enjoyed reading your poem which serves as a poignant reminder of how brief encounters can make lasting impressions in our psyche and soul.
