In my pocket,
I carry a bag of lies.
They foster false impressions,
That I truly despise.
But I can’t help myself,
Should I just sit on life’s shelf?
Perpetuating one big lie,
That I am a simple, innocent elf?
A litany of lies,
They force us to compromise.
We pretend to be someone else,
Like snow, the images just melt.
The list of our dishonest endeavors,
Just hopelessly and fatally severs,
What good we raise to the surface,
To capture in a thimble our true purpose.
Lies, lies, and more lies,
They just darken our skies.
They prevent revealing who we are,
Like the false twinkle of a distant star.
In a vast, all-encompassing darkness,
That knows nothing at all of kindness,
They create life’s truth in masquerade;
The evils of the world swagger on parade.
Even my silence
Becomes a form of compliance,
Hiding my despair,
In a hush of false air,
Pretending to be happy,
When in fact I am sad.
Silence can be a lie,
That loud noise cannot amplify
Why can’t we just say,
Without more falsehood to pay,
That a lie is just a mistake,
That we inadvertently create.
To be something we are not;
To have something that goes to rot.
We think of our lies as a form of play;
In the end, we simply give ourselves away.
I prefer the truth, but it is sometimes hard to put forth & lying is just so much easier, it flows easier, possibly because we humans have had so much practice with the use of it...-e-
I've always found it easier to free the truth than to hold onto a lie. While it is easy to lie to make someone else feel better or to keep someone from thinking badly of you, holding that lie in means that it will only fester and eventually come back to the surface. The fewer lies you hide and the more truths you reveal, the happier you will be.
if there is a bag of lies in your pocket, there should be a bag of truths; otherwise, how do you discriminate between them to know that the bag you've described above is filled with lies? Most probably, the bag of truths is just in another pocket of your trousers. . . check it up in your jacket too ;)) A one-sided piece which has been charged with no inspiration ;(( Cheers, alex
Yes John, a lot of what you say true enough. I lived with my lies, especially during my two lost decades. But for the last many years I have ferreted out my lies and confronted them, and confronted them many times in the lines of my poetry, just as you are doing with this poem. I am who I am, and anyone who knows me in these past many years know the real me, not the sham I used to be.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
