A Second Heart
By John Herlihy

I hear the sound of a beating heart;
Not near, not distant, only a second apart.
At first silence, then like steady breath in a rush,
Pumping and pulsating with the whisper of a hush.
A second heart like a second nature, flooding my veins,
The heart blood of nature creating livid reddish stains,
That streak between the clouds like a flaming sword,
The clouds gathered on the horizon of their own accord.
In reverence, the horizon awaits the descent of light,
Before disappearing completely with the coming of night.

Mother Nature has forces that forever pulsate and glow;
Her heart has the infinite capacity sheer mystery to bestow.
When lost amid the silent places on earth, I feel forsaken,
Until this second heart begins to beat, mine to be taken.
To fill me with all the mystery the universe has to impart,
To a mere human such as myself with only a simple heart.
In the vast deserts and oceans of the world beats a mighty heart;
In the void of the heavens lies mystery with answers to impart.
In all the deep universe, one story continues to be told,
A second heart beats with us whose revelations are bold.

TO KNOW THAT THERE IS A FORCE WITHIN US THAT IS GREATER THAN US IS A MARVELOUS BEGINNING. TO KNOW THAT WHERE OUR ABILITIES AS HUMANS END THIS FORCE, WHICH IS AND ALWAYS WAS, TAKES US FROM EARTH TO WONDROUS PLACES AND TO RECOGNIZE THIS FORCE...THIS HEARTBEAT...AND GIVE REVERENCE TO THE MAGNIFICENCE OF IT'S PRESENCE, INDEED, IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM(PVB 9:10). A SECOND HEARTBEAT...THE SPIRIT THAT LIVES WITHIN US IS INDEED JUST THAT. THANKS FOR SHARING, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I know that it is a metaphor for the vibrant life beating all around us, but I can't help waxing literal and practical on you with these thoughts.

A second heart brings thoughts of a companion so close that your hearts be almost as one. Or it could be that your old, diseased one had been taken out, thrown away and replaced by a new transplant (commonly and routinely done these days). Finally, in a new procedure, the old heart is left to remain and a second heart is installed to assist. Therefore, whenever needed, your second heart kicks in and you really feel like a child in nature again.

a second heart? A second centre? Yes, if to put into consideration that each and every thing consists of generation and accomplishment. in the sense, the heart is represented by the numbers five and six; so, the second heart's beating is that of the Yin (feminine) nature based on the Yang's force (masculine) of generation (five) 'of those whose revelations are bold.' Cheers, alex

Mother nature is in equal parts beauty and destruction. Her heartbeat lives within ourselves. Great write.

Your poem inspires me to reflect upon the many times Mother Nature has offered solace and tranquility during troubled times, where a stroll along the seashore works its magic.
