At first, the boat floats precarious on placid waters,
Stepping inside an act of survival in narrow quarters.
As I sit down, I make efforts to calm my nerves,
The azure waters reflect the blue that heaven deserves.
The prow sleek and beautifully crafted by human touch,
Separating the mist with dignity, it understood that much.
The kayak and I are one as we drift through river slime,
Moving out of the present moment into future time.
Swans float by and studiously take no notice,
I could be a butterfly, or a lily pad, or even a lotus.

The oar has been carved lovingly by the builder’s hand,
A single oar, sculptured, varnished, and burnished tanned.
All of nature salutes, then bows down in solemn respect;
The hand-made kayak now christened with raindrops flecked.
The virgin launching a testament to a boat that can now float,
Crafted with loving care that only human emotion can denote.

On the other hand, when asked, 'Could a newbie steer a boat?' Confucius replied 'Yes. If one can swim. . .' Cheers, alex
You put it succinctly: stepping inside an act of survival in narrow quarters.
