Tanka poems consist of 5 lines with a 5-7-5-7-7 rhythm variation. They make for quick, if not easy, reading.

Fragility John Herlihy Emotions smolder Fires burn down to cold coals Silver shiny glass Makes for hard brittle mirrors Fragility breaks elbows Dawn Arrives John Herlihy Birds wake with the dawn Early starters in the light With license to sing They mingle mirth by themselves Wind and wings hum as mute elves

There is no relationship between these two poems. They are independent of each other. I just happened to post two rather than one since they are so short. John

the first piece is truly fragile in its silence, while the second is a volumetric song performed in polyphony. As to the last line of the second tanka, for me 'as the mute past' sounds much more dramatically ;)) Cheers, alex

I like the first one better than the second. That last line just doesn't mesh with the topic in both poems. Maybe I'm missing something�
