The Unwelcome Ghost
By John Herlihy

The unwelcome ghost is not a ghost at all,
Soon to know why without any desire to stall.
The unwelcome ghost comes only in the night,
Uninvited, he of course gives me quite a fright.

I suddenly awake to the dream of lasting night,
Moving from one dream to another as if in spite.
The patch of darkness became terrible to behold,
As if seeing it the first time as from someone told.

The plate of darkness seems to make polite way,
For the nocturnal passing of the moon’s velvet light,
That rises mysteriously from ancient primeval forests,
Only to descend trembling with the passing of night.

I mention rising fear as though it were a palpable dream;
Whereas in truth I felt like an animal in the night instead.
Whether in light or darkness, the animal remains alone;
The animal presence feels no compulsion to fear or atone.

The rain beaded and ran in rivulets down the window pane;
Wind howled as tree branches tapped on the window frame.
By the sound of it, I imaged all of nature to be in insurrection;
The whole world seemed to melt into the window’s reflection.

Truth to tell, the living nightmare began to quietly unfold;
The walls themselves seemed to echo whispers secretly told.
I am awake but frozen motionless and couldn’t move a muscle;
A presence was sitting on my chest, I couldn’t a finger rustle.

The haunting now suddenly real, my fear beginning to crawl,
The awesome presence as silent as a whisper from the wall.
The urge to scream was deep inside; but I had no free will;
My mind was in utter turmoil, but my body simply lay still.

Seconds turned into minutes with time in deep conspiracy,
With the unholy presence overwhelming me with its tyranny.
The world passed before my eyes with a surprising shudder;
My life unraveled toward its demise without even a stutter.

The unwelcome ghost was not a ghost at all, but an evil jinn,
Who wanted more than anything to burrow under my skin.
They roam the earth in search of human victims to terrorize,
Listening to their unholy whispers would be most unwise.

I know these dreams very well. Whether jinn, aliens, demons, or nightmares, they're terrifying. As always your gift for imagery is very evident. Rebecca

And here silly old me thought that djinns only resided in lamps.
Of course I knew better, but chose not to. Demons, those fallen angels of myth, are all about us. Part of us, and work to rule our lives all the time. Whether one believes this is our own dark nature, or a truly evil outside force, evil is always with us. An interesting read my friend. Bob

such an unwelcome ghost is a real creature, the size of a dog, whose favourite spot is the breast of sleeping people on which it sits down to suck up thru its butt one's energy also known as qi or chi, which is accumulated in the chest. Since its foodstuff is the human energy mostly, it is a very subtle critter which is able to move from one realm to another; therefore, it could be called a ghost, but it is not. As for the mentioned Mr. Jinnee, this is absolutely another level of power; this phenomenon is huge. a real piece this is. Cheers, alex

The hairs on the back of my neck were raised.
I felt a passing cold.
Your frightful write delights,
and was as good as gold.

There's a name for night terrors. Everyone seems to get them in different form. When you said that something was, "sitting on your chest," it made me think that perhaps you have a heart problem that is exacerbated by a dream like this, forcing you to pump more adrenaline into your system or sleep apnea that would reduce oxygen to your heart and other vital organs, like your brain.

You write of being frozen, motionless.......I've had those kinds of dreams! Those are so frightening along with the needing to scream but not being able to. You have given us fair warning of the evil jinn and I thank you!!

Love ya!

An unwelcome ghost come to me this very morning, finally waking me up. Although a ghost he invaded my reality. A nightmarish dream of my ever increasing short term memory loss. Been awake for almost an hour. I'm still shaken from it.
