Left Alone
By John Herlihy

Sometimes, I only wish to be left alone;
Alone, I said, with no one and I mean no one around.
If you think about it, we live our lives in fulsome crowds.
When I prefer to be by myself in generous puff clouds.
Free of the enticing temptations and all the elusive lies,
Free of the superficial niceties and all the emotional ties,
I have given pieces of myself away far too many times.
Little by little, there is very little left between the lines;
There are always people out there willing enough to take.
Con men (and women) preying on others always on the make;
You feel good about yourself in giving things away to others.
Liberation arises in a world filled with sisters and brothers;
But a moment in time finally arrives when the veil is lifted.
You have nothing left to give, nothing left there to be sifted.
There is a feeling about you that recalls the aridity of the desert,
In the company of a few lazy lizards with nothing much to assert.
And you realize, ya, I can be alone, by myself, happy in solitude,
Without the miseries that others bring with their false solicitude.
Give me an empty cup so I have something there for the filling;
Leave me alone so I can replenish myself with spirit, God willing.

Finding time to be alone and I mean ALONE is like finding a cave full of treasures. "Leave me alone so I can replenish myself with spirit, God willing."..........Let the heavens resound in splendor!!!

Love ya!

There is certainly something to be said about being alone the way you describe it. I have been alone and with others over the years, but fortunately, not in the cacophony of many (like a large family… Except in my youth)

When I'm alone I have time to think and develop some of my best stories. I feel best alone in the heart of nature. But being a twin and having a companion to share things with till I was 20, I did find that being alone and wonderful places with no one to share it with was a downer.

Tell any would-be then: my alone feels so good I'll only have you if you're sweeter than my solitude. (-:

I need my me time, so I can really relate to this write. There are plenty of times when I won't even answer the phone, no matter who is calling.

I agree, especially in these "golden years," I prefer my own company, John. Of course I do have a furry companion by the name of Zoe.

How well do I know the frustration and irritation behind these words! Even though I live alone I still have times when someone insists on stepping on my one remaining nerve. Enjoyed! Rebecca

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
