Premium Poems
By John Herlihy

I save for faithful readers my stash of premium poems,
. . . each one of them born out of the darkness of deep water wells.
Faint echoes of the heart produce my tone poems,
. . . each one of them shaped by the rhythms of distant bells.

Autumn leaves and winter snow are the stuff of my nature poems,
. . . each one of them crafted by the miracle each season tells.
The seasons after all speak in poetic images without using words,
. . . each one of them contains a mystery fully understood by the birds.

My spiritual poems speak of another world within the unknown,
. . . each one of them lifts the cloth of a veil seamless sewn.
These poems delve into the profound mystery of the human soul,
. . . each one of them piecing together fragments that make us whole.

My human interest poems attempt to capture a moment in time,
. . . each one of them highlighting the fleeting tribulations that are mine.
These poems explore the vast mountain caverns of the human condition,
. . . each one of them bringing to light our foibles by our own admission.

Then there are the poems of life and love that have nothing to do with me,
. . . each of them expose human idiosyncrasies laid bare for all to see.
Poems of sadness and loss captured within the framework of depression,
. . . each of them spotlighting loneliness and despair with no concession.

Truth to tell, I have no poems that are not in my eyes premium poems,
. . . each of them but a child born in the heart as individual totems.
Whether expressive of the simplest or the most profound desire,
. . . each of them treasured for what they are in their individual attire.

My poems are all in some way deeply personal regardless of whether they are "true" or not. I can really identify with your verses here.

AND YOU ARE SO RIGHT, JOHN, BECAUSE EVERY POET'S 'VOICE' IS OF VALUE...PREMIUM. I LOVE THIS WORK AND AGREE WITH EVERY LINE EXCEPT ONE(5TH STANZA, 1ST LINE); I DO NOT AGREE THAT A POET WRITES WITHOUT HAVING 'SOMETHING TO DO' WITH A PIECE. I DO BELIEVE THAT A POET RELATES, HOWEVER MINUTELY(A STORY OR SONG HEARD, A BOOK READ, A MOVIE OR PLAY SEEN), IN SOME WAY TO EACH AND EVERY INSPIRATION THAT COMES THROUGH THEM. THIS IS AN OLD WOMAN'S PERSONAL OPINION, OF COURSE...BARE WITH ME, JOHN(SMILE). THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

in my humble opinion, a true poet/ess is he/she who fills each of his/her line with sincerity formed at the bottom of the heart first and only then deep in the guts because one has to be a daredevil to speak on the name of the heavens. Cheers, alex

I don't understand why one would call a poem, " premium," like advertising gasoline as somehow better when it's only higher octane, but I certainly like good wordsmithing like, "cloth of a veil seamless sewn."

Ditto what Jerry said. Just keep them coming, and write on.

Eh, nothing like blowing your own horn concerning your poetry, John. When you're right, you're right. Every poem I have read of yours rocks me with "premium" craftsmanship.
