I pulled the shades on the open window,
To stare intently into the total darkness.
I needed to get my night eyes in focus,
To rid the darkness of its hocus-pocus.
At first, I could see nothing to mention.
Darkness held everything in suspension.
I close my eyes to see depths of outer space,
Highlighted by inner stars twinkling in place.
I open my eyes to see what darkness reveals,
Closing down the day and all that it conceals.
A vast panorama opens as whole worlds unfold,
A primal awakening revealing mysteries untold.
Luminescence lies in waiting should anyone ask,
Nocturnal eyes in the kingdom all up to the task.
The owl sits contentedly as it watches its prey,
The wolf springs into action the forest to foray.
Bats steal vision from sound waves and their echo,
Who swept the floor last night but a friendly gecko.
Glowworms drag light as they move along the way,
Fireflies illuminate the dark night as though at play.
A world of color appears when I close my eyes,
Awash in shades of light the darkness to demise.
Behind closed lids, all colors running thru my head,
Purples and greens, soft yellows, coal blacks, and red.
They now mingled into and poured over one another,
One by one, all the colors acted as brother to brother
They swelled, they shrank, they folded and blended,
Night color flowed a river; I felt breathless, winded.
Night eyes bask in the glow of luminous colored light,
Turning darkness into day, rudely banishing the night.

Sorry for getting technical. True night would be the absence of light, like the background of outer space. As you stated, many creatures and even plants in nature and ways of creating light and the moon provides varied amounts of light throughout most nights to give all nocturnal creatures some sight for their nocturnal gathering and hunting. Most rely on their sense of smell and hearing to guide them to food or prey.
Even in the darkness of night, there's still a hint of light. One my great thrills is experiencing total darkness when you're down inside a cave and all man made lights are off. If everything is quiet, you can actually hear the blood rushing through your ears.
finally, I tend towards consensus reached daily between the day and night, as both know exactly the terms of alternation to avoid cutting one's own throat. And they both know well the color gamma -- their common joy unfolded from both sides, east and west. Cheers, alex
In order to dissect the "Night Eyes," you need not blink I'm thinking. You took control of what you were seeing and your thoughts turned into words even unto the rising of the sun. Pretty much covered it all I'm thinking. Excellent work.
Fireflies illuminating the darkness, now that is quite the sight. I love your night shades dear man, everything comes alive beneath the still dome of eglantine, have a good day, when morning arrives, don the daylight glasses, and get to it. xo
