The Consolation of Music
By John Herlihy

What can temper the base metal of a heart,
Make it soft and pliable, not rigid and cold?
What can soothe the lonely, broken apart,
Fill the empty spaces and no longer feel old?

Music has consolation we never thought we knew;
It pours forth as liquid silver into our heart stone.
Sacred music drips golden nectar from a bee’s brew,
Evoking emotions and dreams never before known.

The sound of music teaches us the ability to hear,
To listen to the soft wind and the song of the loon.
By endless days and still nights, it tempers our fear,
To fill our hearts with the mystery of an ancient rune.

Silence awakens with the gentle rhythms of dawn;
Music lifts us high aloft on the wings of sparrows.
Silence sleeps again at twilight as a forest fawn;
Night rushes in as a tidal flood thru the narrows.

Silence has its own music that we always rush to fill;
The earth slips away for a moment to hear the Name.
If you listen to silence carefully, you can hear it still;
The Name makes sacred sounds only you can claim.

All of nature sends forth melodies that rejoice;
But it comes to naught without a receptive ear.
The cricket and frog speak with their own voice;
Sound waves in the ear that in the eye forms a tear.

The luminous spray, the veil lifted from our sight,
Music everywhere, filling eyes and ears with light.

A music ode to be remembered, for music fills our hearts with emotion combined with lyrics that raise our souls to new heights. The only thing better would be for it to be put to music.

Music soothes the soul,
and our joy is increased.
It's our common connection,
and tames the savage beast.

Ah, "The Sound of Silence" as I listen to Disturbed's version for the thousandth time. "Hello, darkness, my old friend." "But my words, like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence."
Silence is golden.

Music. I have been hooked on it since early childhood from early country music to rock, and found solace with the great composers.

I have an old violin at home. It's a copy cat of a Stradivarius. Bought it at a second hand store, Still in it's original old wood case with crushed velvet and old fashioned hook lock. Don't play it right now the bow is broken, not good at it anyway. I need to get it fixed. I love your poem, it evokes passion and dreams. Have a great day xo

I can certainly attest to the power of music and its effect on us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Think Beethoven's exquisite "Moonlight Sonata," "Coming To America," by Neil Diamond, or even the beloved "Silent Night." Music is the voice of our spirits and the soundtrack of our lives. It feeds our hearts in a way nothing else can. Those who think it less can only be half alive, for they have forgone the very essence of living. I feel sorry for those who do not partake of its unique nourishment.
