The Beginning of the End
By John Herlihy

Is anyone out there beyond the pacific rim?
Is anyone listening to the secrets under my skin?
Some days I awaken with a clear message to send;
Other days just feel like the beginning of the end.
The signs are out there shimming on the horizon;
I reach out to read them from an old body wizened.
No longer sleeping like a baby, I linger long awake,
Soft slippers, soft music, soft food for my own sake.
When I look back, I can happily list what I achieved.
Why, then, in the night’s darkness, do I feel bereaved?
You would think that age would bring compensations;
What little there is only feels like stingy dispensations.
With darkness comes a hint of the beginning of the end;
At first light, on bird wings, dawn has much to portend.

AND 'FIRST LIGHT' PORTENDS AND ADVANCES...WELL! HOWEVER, OF COURSE, WHEN ONE CONSIDERS THAT TIME FOR THIS WORLD IS WINDING DOWN, IT'S NATURAL TO 'FEEL', NOW AND THEN, THE ENDS APPROACH. AND TO FEEL IT SO MUCH MORE IN THE DARK. KEEPING THIS IN MIND, I MIGHT SUGGEST TO CONSIDER...IT'S IN THE DARK THAT 'HIS' LIGHT/TRUTH CAN BE SEEN EVEN CLEARER. ENJOYED! THANKS FOR SHARING. We all contemplate the end and poets have a way of getting around to it eloquently. But I think I will pass on such a dire endeavor until I reach that point… hopefully never… dying before I reach that point of needing to express my concern for the end.

Profound and so full of warmth, making alive the images in your words. The rhythm and flow of your lines are smooth and soothing, and the closing lines touching with its reality.
