To love only one person simply isn’t enough,
The beloved adored, the rest treated rough.
I love wild flowers, dawn mist, honeyed coffee,
Birdsong, twilight, and sticky English toffee.
What about rain and its torrential downpours,
Or the sighting of an eagle as my heart soars.
Forget not the moody moon or blink of a star,
Loving brings things near that often seem far.
Night vision plays light against night’s darkness;
Nature’s bounty can be cruel in all its starkness.
Nature’s beauty and its truth can never tell a lie;
Loving has its own reality heard even in a sigh.
I will always love you until I arrive at death’s door;
But loving you isn’t enough to preserve in my store.
I will love most tenderly the sun, moon, and the stars;
I will preserve nature’s precious beauty in glass jars.
Bell towers and sacred groves, I will love them all;
Their beloved sanctity will hold my heart in thrall.
The mountains, rivers, torrential rain, they all know;
Divine mystery captured in the fragile flakes of snow.
Even the chill winter cold instills whiteness into breath;
While all of nature speaks the hushed words of death.
The act of loving washes away a multitude of sin,
Filling us with heavenly light to the heart’s brim.
YOUR FIRST LINE, DEPENDS UPON WHAT PERSPECTIVE YOU'RE COMING FROM, JOHN. FOR IN THE CASE OF HOLY MATRIMONY GOD WHO 'NEVER' ASKS US TO DO ANYTHING THAT 'THROUGH HIM' IS NOT POSSIBLE, DID SET UP THE STANDARD WHICH HE KNEW HUMAN BEINGS WOULD BE ABLE TO EXECUTE; HE GAVE ONE MAN, ONE WIFE AND ONE WIFE, ONE MAN. WE CAN STEP OUTSIDE OF THE 'PERFECTION' OF THE GARDEN AND DO OUR OWN WILL, OF COURSE, BECAUSE THE CREATOR HAS ALWAYS GIVEN US THE RIGHT TO 'CHOOSE'. HOWEVER, HE SHOWED US HOW HE WANTED IT TO BE...'IN THE BEGINNING'. CERTAINLY WE LOVE MANY OTHER THINGS AND 'CREATIONS' IN 'HIS' VAST UNIVERSE, WHICH INCLUDES MANY FELLOW HUMANS THROUGH FAMILY, FRIENDS, ACQUAINTANCES, AND WITHIN THE PURE SWEET BONDS OF 'BROTHERHOOD'...WHICH IS BOUNDLESS. LOVING IS A 'GIFT' OFTEN ABUSED BY THOSE FOLLOWING THEIR OWN INCLINATIONS WHO, IN DOING SO, LOSE THE 'BEAUTY' OF ITS TRUE INTENTIONS. THE ABILITY TO 'LOVE' FLOWS FROM THE MASTER, WHO FIRST LOVED US, AND IT'S TO BE TREASURED, TENDERED AND REVERED. WHEN WE DO THIS, BY FIRST'LOVING' GOD, IT BECOMES A VEHICLE BY WHICH WE ARE 'MIRACULOUSLY' KEPT, FULFILLED AND REVIVED...DAILY. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Your words empower those who see only the "objects" of love to consider to be in a state of love is far more the point, that picking one thing or one person, dog, cat, et al to love is mere foreplay. Far too few seek out the bliss of being in the state of love.
You sound like a very loving human being, wish more people would realize the value of loving it all, indiscriminately as you do in this poem. well said John, have a nice evening hugs xo
I see here a great zest for life that allows the heart to grow and encompass ever-growing love. You are right, an open heart cannot love just one, but must love everything beautiful that comes along. Why some of us never settle, still looking for the next love around the corner of a new day.
