Over the Centuries
By John Herlihy

Over the centuries, humans never grew old;
Faces may change, the stories the same told.
Some people wish to be potentates and kings,
Farmers, blacksmiths, or fighters in the ring.
Others are content to merely be what they are,
Scholar, lawyer, simpleton, or even a fallen star.

Over the centuries, a human heart varies in hue,
Whether black or white, why sometimes even blue.
The heart so big, multiple emotions to withstand;
Some emotions inspire deeds requiring reprimand.
Whether centuries or millennia, time will always tell;
History is full of immensities that often toll as a bell.

There is a certain nobleness in feeling the pain of others.
What about the heart whose behavior only smothers?
There is a certain dignity in suffering one’s own pain;
The pain will pass but what endures will be the gain.
Some impulses are as dead as those who commit them;
The lessons never learned if anyone tries to outwit them.

Love and lust human foils that often go hand in hand;
Pride and insult in counterbalance full of reprimand.
Hatred and revenge step brothers who see eye to eye;
Regret and loss but sightless eyes trying to see on the sly.
Human foibles are as bead necklaces around our necks;
Tightening the noose as our destiny becomes more complex.

Over the centuries, people question the reality of the soul,
As if without the soul we could be anything but less whole.
Imagine a presence not in any way distinctive or unique;
No inner light that draws upon an otherworldly mystique.
What is a candle without the flame and its inner glow?
What would we have to offer without the soul’s overflow?

Over the centuries, time continues to run its course;
The years pass by relentlessly and without remorse.
We have one brief moment our unique story to tell;
Whether for good or evil, death will sound its knell.
Thereafter, in later years, no one will be left who knew;
The centuries pass as they must do, and everyone slew.

OVER THE CENTURIES MANY, MANY CREATED THINGS ARE TOUCHED AND DO CHANGE...SOMETIMES FOR THE BETTER, MORE OFTEN FOR THE WORSE AS, INDEED, IT'S BEEN PROPHESIED TO DO. HOWEVER THERE IS SOMETHING THAT THE PASSING OF THE CENTURIES CANNOT AND WILL NOT 'EVER' ALTER...THE PRESENCE OF THE CREATOR. HE EVER WAS, EVER IS, AND EVER WILL BE.THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

One thing is for certain, unless one can separate oneself from the crowd by a pen like yours, a performance, leadership quality, creation of something new, or an heroic act in time of trouble, one is doomed to be part of the nameless, faceless, masses of humanity that make things happen but go unsung, most in unmarked graves.

Of course, sometimes the infamous are more well-known than the heroes that brought them down.

Along with what it says, this poem makes one think and reflect on their own life and doings. Excellent write.

Read this twice, and marveled at it each time. A broad scope of the doings of man over the centuries, enough to debunk modern day thinking. My favorite line . . . "Hatred and revenge step brothers who see eye to eye;"

A nice flow of thinking, introspective and philosophical. A unique image to accentuate your meditation. Enjoyed. Peace.... r

Excellent poetic write John and it really made me think.
It makes me think of a famous Christian song which says that Kings and Queens will all pass away but Jesus will be with us eternally until the last days.
Anyway, the song goes something like that but it's so true.
I cannot remember the names of most kings or queens or presidents
Then, the birth of Jesus is the date we set our days on a calendar.
Not that it's exactly accurate, but like Him or not, He made a huge impact on the world like no other. All of the turmoil in the world is predicted in our Bible and many ministers think we are in the last days of the earth. I'm not worried because I know where I am going. Another Historial subject that is so controversial is if there is eternal life. I have friends who have seen heaven and hell who have clinically died and have come back to life to tell about both. I have studied the subject for many years and it is even scientifically proven that hundreds of after life experiences are for real. It's an exciting time to be alive. But one thing we all have in common is that we will all surely die. I don't believe in pushing up daisies I believe we have a spirit that will live on forever. The question or the mystery is where?

If we look at life's generalities over the course of time, there is nothing new. History aside, it boils down to emotions and feelings we abide from day to day.
