The Hand of Time
By John Herlihy (Saturday 20/1/18)

Time always lays a hand on us all,
Gently from nowhere does it fall.
The budding look of youth appears,
Soon enough it will fall into arrears.

Our face features do stay the same,
Their edges end up taking the blame.
The flesh may be fuller but soon sags,
The eyes dulled and wear heavy bags.

The shiny black hair turned bone grey,
The mouth still has too much to say.
Frozen in time from years in a snarl,
The hands now wrinkled and gnarled.

While age does spread its pitiful film,
The soul ripens in this earthly realm.
The rosy cheeks that once did bloom,
Now sag, shaded in shadows of gloom.

The face will tell the tale of the years,
Eyes once bright will shed many tears.
The faculties no longer calculate fair,
But still breathe the fresh morning air.

The budding flower soon gives the lie,
As it does age, wither and finally die.
Time relinquishes our present to past,
The future seen standing at the mast.

Not all beauty is physical. As we age, we grow wiser and maybe more compassionate to others. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and not that darn mirror.

This poem reads like a rose bud opening, having it's time of people gazing at it's beauty, drooping a bit, and then dropping it's petals that look so beautiful upon the grass. Oh, I DO go on! 'Enjoyed!

Love ya!

time is definitely out of our control. But is it so in this world only, or. . . if we change our space/universe, could it be any alternatives in our favour?. . is this world which is oftentimes called 'a prison' for us is so because of the time pressure?. . it seems this point cannot be button up by a sober band of musicians and poets ;)) Cheers, alex

I like to think that while time waits for no one, aging and death are inevitable, but the aging process also brings wisdom from experience. Why the elders of villages were always asked to teach the young so that they would not experience the same "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune," as their teachers had.

aging is much better than the alternative

The only aspect of age you left out is the chance that some of us will age positively in our take on the past, the experiences that need to be shared, the conviction that one's life as a poet can be forever grounded in words of hopeful wisdom. This added to your thinking, there is a total picture of the rewards of growing old.

Age is finally catching with me. I'm not all that amused about it.

In my youth,
I was wild and woolly.
But age takes it toll,
So I'm trying to age "grays-fully.

You unraveled the process of aging, it's uplifts and it's downfalls, nature always calls us home. I have enjoyed your poem this morning. Wishing you a pleasant day, with an equal portion of productivity and quiet moments.
