Loss
By John Herlihy

Sweet fulness only a fixture,
We hardly know its around.
Until we feel its departure,
As emptiness run aground.

Loss swept without mercy,
Cresting over the wild shore.
Its wave breaking the heart,
Sinking in, then much more.

Soon a plague of desolation,
Miseries without pagination.
Ravaged by a chronic fever,
Left behind as a sad griever.

A fluid stream of remorse,
The verdict, guilty of course.
We do get what we deserve,
Nothing held back in reserve.

A place of white winter cold,
Empty echoes of things told.
The laughter now just silence,
No hand to feel in compliance.

Things appear from nowhere,
Only to go back, leaving despair.
Then putting a lien on the body,
And a mortgage upon the soul.

Lost, and by the wind, grieved,
In shadows of night perceived.
Ghost of loss, there in the rain,
Spare me your haunting pain.

We don't notice our plenty until it's too late and gone. We should learn to appreciate what we have when we have it. Or else we will fall into the despair you describe so perfectly.

You put the whole feeling right out there. I can relate! With my parents and brothers gone, I'm in the middle of a desert with nothing in sight at times. Kudos!

Love ya!

With every stanza, you hammered home the empty and helpless feeling that happens when we have great loss. I would feel happy for you for writing such a poem, except it makes me so sad.

My tenant came to me today telling me the story of her loss. She is far away from her native land and tries to support her family there. Her father died sometime ago. And, a very few years ago her mother died without her ever seeing her again. Since that, her sister died. Lately she has been upset because she had to pay for surgery for her younger brother, 50, to find out if he had cancer.

Today she found out. He had a large malignant tumor that was removed successfully. He was recovering well in the recovery room, when he had a heart attack. He was revived in the recovery room and that followed with another heart attack. Eventually he could not be saved.

She is suffering great loss and helplessly doing nothing about it. Your poem certainly reinforces exactly how she is feeling.

One can feel the hurt and pain expressed in this poem, and anyone who has experienced loss can relate to.

Grief and loss can bring us to a place of such emptiness and despair. I understand your poem fully, I felt this way when I lost my mom
Thanks for sharing, have a great day,

THE DEVASTATION OF DEEP, HEART-WRENCHING LOSS IS CLEARLY IMAGED HERE AND IT'S NO WONDER THAT SOME DO NOT RECOVER FROM SUCH A BLOW. I CAN ONLY THANK GOD FOR THE ONLY THING THAT CAN TAKE US THROUGH SUCH A STATE... 'HIS WORD'! HAB 3:17-19, JHN 16:33, ROM 8:35-39. THANKS FOR SHARING.
