Earthbound, I Fly
By John Herlihy

Earthbound, but I gaze quietly overhead,
Captured by the eternal blue of the sky.
Out of reach beyond us, infinite instead,
Heaven looks down as if wishing to reply.

What is it about the blue celestial dome?
Who constructed it, preserves it, and why?
When I look into its heart, I feel at home;
As I close my eyes, I utter a simple sigh.

Earthbound, I sometimes wish to escape,
Rise ourselves up upon our toes, lift off, fly.
The human story we wish to slightly remake,
In indigo blue, free floating thru summer sky.

Imagine the feathered wings I would employ,
Creating uplift as they hum through the air.
I drink from the silver chalice of human joy,
All tribulation left behind with deep despair.

Sky-bound , I look lovingly upon the earth,
My beloved home since the time of my birth.
Would that I could freely fly hour after hour,
Exulting in such breathless joy and power.

How can we capture the sense of the impossible,
A mirage, a rainbow, a star beyond our reach?
How can we make the impossible truly possible,
Mother Nature enlightens what no one can teach?

I float down to earth, my feet again on the ground;
I feel at peace, standing here on this little mound.
Earthbound, we still live in the world, here, now;
Tomorrow, I hope to lift off and fly again, somehow.

Just like the songs, "Free Bird" and "Learning To Fly", this poem expresses the imagined flight, seeing above and below. Outstanding, John!!

Love ya!

From the beginning, earthbound man has looked up, and dreamed. Well done.

yeeesss, that is the best!! What a lyrics it is to my song!! Especially, it regards the first half which is written in one breath; then, the rhythm has been changed a little bit, deliberately or not, it's hard to say, but the theme goes on threading its way to the last full stop. Again, it's such a beautiful ode. . . and 'somehow' is actually a strong final with content much solid that it could be seen from outside. it is an inverted word here which works. Cheers, alex

I have flown while standing on the ground, it is all a simple matter of perception. Those many years I walked the mean streets of America I found myself flying when I suddenly perceived the beauty behind the trash around me. Flying is a reality if we want to "see" it.

We can not capture the essence of what was born free underneath God's tutelage-loved hands. I enjoyed your poetry this morning, Have a wonderful day, hugs.

Hail Poet John Herlihy!

Wisdom and Peace.

It is always a gala party in this poetic castle, where guests and courties can enjoy aesthetical four course meals; and dessert of
philosophical ambrosias.

I have enjoyed the reading of twenty-eight lines of exquisite inspiring poetry. "Earthbound, I Fly" glows on constellation Beauty.

Viva the Poet!

In reverent appreciation,

Skydiving was the closest my bride and I ever been to actual flying.
The other was soaring, it's a difference in wings without noise.
There are other new ways to fly solo that may be worth a try.
But I doubt if we will ever soar like an eagle or an owl in the sky!
Nice write!
